Venue: Multipurpose Room 1, Kathleen Syme Library, 251 Faraday St Carlton

Contemporary middle years teachers are searching for ways to engage students effectively in word study to meet the rapidly increasing reading demands encountered in secondary school. Research tells us that vocabulary knowledge and skills influence student capacity to engage successfully with the texts they encounter at each year level (Alvermann and Eakle 2003; Rycik and Irvin 2005). It has been shown that improving vocabulary knowledge and skills can contribute to improved reading comprehension (Pressley, 2000). But relying on traditional teacher-led approaches of setting dictionary definition tasks for prescribed lists of words can prove inadequate for improving student skills (Blintz, 2011; Lawrence, White and Snow, 2010). Building word consciousness (Anderson and Nagy, 1993) in English classrooms offers a vibrant, effective option for developing student enthusiasm for learning new words and improving vocabulary.

This interactive workshop will introduce teachers to the concept of word consciousness and present them with ideas for building vocabulary learning opportunities into all parts of English teaching and learning. Resources developed by the presenters will be shared and teacher participants will be invited to select a focus area for improvement in their teaching of vocabulary. Time and assistance will be given to help teachers plan their approach to improving teaching in their selected area and there will be the opportunity to continue electronic communication with presenters and co-participants as they trial new teaching techniques in their classrooms throughout the upcoming school term.

** Teachers are asked to bring a dictionary and thesaurus with them for use in the workshop.

Target audience: Teachers of Years 7 and 8, preferably attending in pairs or small groups from schools, planning to improve their teaching of vocabulary.

Presenters: Helen Woodford and Catriona Woodford
