· discuss keys aspects and challenges of the English curriculum
· join an online professional network
· feel supported as a new member of the profession
· acquire professional learning hours towards VIT accreditation
A series of sessions will address practical and pedagogical issues for English teachers, as well as provide rich resources, strategies and practical ideas that can be used in the classroom.
In our first years of teaching, we may spend hours and hours painstakingly planning out our teaching lessons and units of work. Unfortunately, however, the busyness of working in a school doesn't always allow for this. Our presenter, Amy, knows all too well these problems and will be running a hands-on session aimed to help early career teachers to ensure that their planning time is efficient and effective. She'll be covering many practical strategies for how to best built units of work from scratch and to organise yourself so you can see what's coming ahead in your teaching. To get the most out of this workshop, it's recommended that you come with a unit of work in mind that you're currently or may be about to start planning out.
Amy Haywood is in her fifth year of teaching, having recently completed her Masters of Teaching on exchange in Finland. She came to teaching through the ‘Teach For Australia’ program, which saw her placed in an outer-metropolitan high-school serving a low-SES community. As one of the curriculum leaders in the English faculty, she led curriculum design and development across Years 7-11. Her work focuses on developing curriculum that is accessible and engaging for all students, outcomes-driven and easy to implement. These tenants underpin her practice at her current school where she teaches VCE English.
