Working with literacy and engagement issues in the English classroom

Time: 4.30pm – 7pm
Presenter: Chris Wheat
Location: Multi-purpose room 1
Address: Kathleen Syme Library and Community Centre, 251 Faraday Street Carlton Vic 3053

Chris has recently retired from English teaching after 42 years – much of it at Sunshine Secondary College, where he helped to establish a successful literacy program. Discovering students who are reluctant to learn, or disabled by reading and writing problems, can be very confronting in the first years of teaching. Chris experienced this in his first years at Sunshine and will draw on these experiences in the workshop.
Chris has written on Education issues in The Age and published articles in Idiom and English in Australia. He has also written five young adult novels, and short stories. He is also the facilitator of VATE’s Solutions Network which aims to support teachers in disadvantaged schools to find good solutions to the problems of engagement and making a mandated curriculum work for all students.
The Early Career Teachers’ Network offers graduate and early career teachers of English an opportunity to:
· network with their English teaching colleagues
· engage in targeted professional learning
· reflect on their work
· discuss keys aspects and challenges of the English curriculum
· join an online professional network
· feel supported as a new member of the profession
· acquire professional learning hours towards VIT accreditation
A series of sessions will address practical and pedagogical issues for English teachers, as well as provide rich resources, strategies and practical ideas that can be used in the classroom.
Note: Phone booking is available, but will incur a $20 booking fee per individual.
